Nissan lays claim to be the first automotive brand to sell a car on Twitter

Nissan has become the first automotive brand in Europe to sell a car over Twitter after responding to a challenge on the social media platform from a prospective customer.

Twitter user Raul Escolano (@escolano) used the hashtag #compraruncocheportwitter ("Buy a car on Twitter") to call on car makers across Spain to sell him a car using only social media.

Antamotor, a Nissan dealer in the Spanish city of A Coruña, responded via Periscope, using the Twitter-owned video streaming platform to give Escolano a personalized walkthrough of the car.

Escolano called on his Twitter followers to help him in the decision making process through a Twitter poll asking them to rate the cars he was considering.

The X-Trail received the most votes with 43 per cent of the vote, which Nissan says helped "seal the deal".

At no point during the transaction did Escolano have to visit the dealership either as the keys to the car were delivered to him by courier.

The success and public profile of the transaction could pave the way for similar transactions as car makers intensify their efforts to appeal to tech-savvy customers and strengthen their revenue streams.
