The Department of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Humanities and Sciences at the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT), recently hosted SCIFEST 2025, the institute’s signature event now in its third consecutive year.

Far more than just a competition, SCIFEST has become a nationally recognized platform that nurtures curiosity, sparks innovation, and empowers the next generation of thinkers and problem-solvers to look beyond traditional boundaries.

The event was held at the SLIT premises and featured two flagship categories.

The Quiz Competition tested the science-based knowledge of O/L students, while the Young Innovators’ Competition created a stage for budding inventors to present their solutions to real-world challenges.

In the weeks leading up to the grand finale, preliminary rounds were conducted for both categories, attracting widespread participation.

Twenty-six schools entered the quiz preliminaries, while the Young Innovators’ Competition drew contributions from forty-five participants representing schools and sixteen from SLIIT itself.

This overwhelming response reflected the growing reputation of SCIFEST as a true national stage for discovery and innovation.

The final day unfolded under the distinguished presence of Prof. Udeni Nawagamuwa, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering and General President of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS), who graced the event as Chief Guest.

His attendance highlighted the importance of strengthening science education and research at all levels of society and served as an inspiration to the young competitors.

Throughout the day, students displayed their knowledge, creativity, and resilience in equal measure.

After an intense battle of scientific knowledge, G. Sanghamiththa Balika Vidyalaya was crowned champion of the Quiz Competition.

Their achievement underscored not only academic excellence but also the spirit of teamwork and critical thinking that SCIFEST aims to cultivate.

The Young Innovators’ Competition proved to be equally inspiring, as students brought forward groundbreaking ideas that addressed pressing societal challenges.

In the school category, Rusandu Thasnaka of Ananda College, Colombo 10, secured first place with his project on PET Bottle Recycling, a timely and practical solution to one of the world’s most urgent environmental issues.

In the SLIIT category, the top prize went to Team Drive Sense, comprising Shageeshan Thamodhara, Maheesha Pramuditha, Luhansa Sooriyabandara, and Hiruni Pramodini.

Their project, Drive Sense, showcased a remarkable blend of creativity and technical expertise, highlighting the ability of young researchers to create solutions with both local and global relevance.

What made these winning projects stand out was not only their originality but also their direct impact on society.

From environmental sustainability to intelligent mobility, the ideas presented were powerful reminders of how science and innovation can improve lives and contribute to broader national development goals.

Yet, beyond the excitement of victory, SCIFEST carries a deeper meaning. Its true significance lies in the culture of curiosity and problem-solving it fosters among students across the island.

By welcoming participants from diverse schools and backgrounds, the event ensures that opportunities for scientific growth and recognition are not confined to a single geography.

By bridging the gap between education and innovation, and by inspiring students to think creatively about science, technology, and sustainability, SLIIT continues to play a vital role in preparing Sri Lanka for a future driven by knowledge and discovery.
