The Rotary Club of Battaramullas School Refurbishment Initiative of Rajagiriya Tamil Mixed Vidyalayam

While education is universally recognized as a fundamental right, the reality is that not all schools begin on equal footing.

Financial stability, often determined by school fees or donor support—creates a visible divide.

This raises a sobering question : What happens to the future Einstein’s of our society whose parents cannot afford a “premium fee” school?

While education is universally recognized as a fundamental right, the reality is that not all schools begin on equal footing.

The majority of students attending the school come from economically disadvantaged families.

Several households are supported by a single parent or guardian, and access to basic educational resources at home is limited.

Despite these challenges, the children display remarkable resilience, discipline, and eagerness to learn.

For many, the school is not only a place of education but also a space of safety, structure, and hope for a better future.

History reminds us that many of today’s successful leaders emerged from humble beginnings.

It is entirely possible that a future leader is growing up within the walls of this very school today.

The efforts of the teachers have not gone in vain having created a few star students that obtained 3A’s in O levels.

Yet, the daily struggles faced by parents to make ends meet is heartbreaking… when one sees it.

If one sees it. Dedicated sisters who have committed their lives to nurturing underprivileged children along with volunteers who have risen to the occasion.

Teaching in classrooms with collapsing ceilings, broken chairs, missing doors, and deteriorating infrastructure is no easy task- yet they persist.

Teachers like Mrs. Fredricka, who offers her services free of charge, truly become the wind beneath the sail of many young lives.

The Principal, Sister Rosyln, is a driven and passionate leader who continues to strive for excellence despite severe constraints.

Recognizing this need, members of the Rotary Club of Battaramulla - fondly known as ROTABATS - chose to conclude their innings as Rotarians with a project that added real value and, more importantly, genuine smiles during challenging times.

The refurbishment project included a complete overhaul of buildings, furniture and even the main gate.

This entire effort of LKR 1.8 million was funded through club reserves accumulated over the years and approved by a board majority specifically for this cause.

To make the occasion memorable, Shanmugas distributed Indian sweets to the children and as a New Year present - each and every student also received a new set of exercise books, stationery and a beautiful pencil box complete with writing instruments, courtesy EURO COSMETICS.

This initiative truly embodied the words once spoken by Past District Governor and Past President of the Rotary Club of Battaramulla, Gehan Siribaddana :

“The Rotary Club of Battaramulla will aim to win soul-satisfying awards through the smiles of children rather than trophies and badges.”
