On Saturday the 30th of August, the CR&FC Grounds once again plays host to one of the most unique phenomena in the sporting calendar – a bringing together of combined rugby teams of old boys and old girls in the backdrop of the best of local bands and DJs, family fun and fantastic revelry.
Organised for the eighth time by AGOAL International, headed by former Isipathana College, C.R.&F.C. and National Rugby player and renowned rugby personality Dilroy Fernando, the 7-a-side C-Rugby Tag Rugby Tournament will hit the pitch with a total of sixteen teams.
The only tournament that brings together old boys and old girls of brother and sister schools on to the same pitch, the tournament is now affirmed as the premier event to rekindle shared friendships and memories through an action-packed day of rugby with a party that has the best in music and fun filled activities for the entire family.
While reliving the glorious rugby days of the past and a reunion of old mates, some of Sri Lanka’s best bands and DJs will add a party beat to the carnival which will also host vendor markets, street food stalls and a children’s play area.
Non-stop music by Slipping Chairs, Dreaming of Saturn, Pop Culture and Section 8 and DJs Trev D, Rob R and DJ Ace will surely rock the party!
The tournament which will have a total of 39 games begins at 4 pm, going on until midnight, with 24 League games and 15 final round games played on two pitches.
The Bowl Finals are scheduled for 8.30 pm with the Plate Finals and Cup Finals played thereafter.
With each team allowed two players above the age category of over-25, three players above 35 years of age and two female players from the sister school of the boy’s team, the mix ensures that players from different eras come together.
The combined teams of old boys and old girls are from Royal/Visakha, Isipathana/St. Paul’s, St. Joseph’s/St. Bridget’s, Kingswood/Girls’ High School Kandy, Wesley/Methodist, D.S. Senanayake/Sirimavo Bandaranayake, Ananda/Musaeus, Trinity/Hillwood and Ladies, S. Thomas’/Bishop’s, Science College/Girls’ High School Mount Lavinia, St. Sylvester’s/St. Anthony’s Girl’s school, Dharmaraja/Mahamaya, St. Benedict’s/Good Shepherd Convent, Vidyartha/Pushpadana Girls School, St. Peters/Holy Family Convent Bambalapitiya and Thurstan/Devi Balika.
Just as the combined team of Vidyartha/Pushpadana won the C-Rugby Championship, Wesley/Methodist were Plate Champions and St.Peter’s/Holy Family Convent became Bowl Champions last year, this year promises to be an even better celebration of great rugby in a party setting of flying college flags, reverberating cheers and fabulous music.
