RTS Holdings’ Hidellana and Avissawella tea factories achieve Zero Carbon Manufacturing Certification
RTS Holdings has reached a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s tea industry with its Hidellana and Avissawella Tea Factories being awarded the prestigious Zero Carbon Manufacturing Certification by The Sustainable Future Group, reinforcing its leadership in sustainable tea production.
The certification, granted to Avissawella Tea Factory (Private) Limited, and recognizes the factory’s successful transition to net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The achievement follows a comprehensive independent audit conducted in accordance with internationally recognized standards, including the WBCSD/WRI GHG Protocol and ISO 14064-1.
The certification confirms that RTS Holdings has effectively measured and reduced its greenhouse gas emissions to net zero through a combination of internal operational improvements and carbon offsetting initiatives.
As part of this process, the company has offset 1,020 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO₂e), with carbon credits sourced from a certified hydropower project under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).
This milestone highlights RTS Holdings’ strategic commitment to sustainability through the adoption of renewable energy solutions, optimization of energy consumption, and alignment with global environmental frameworks.
The initiative positions the company among the pioneers of zero carbon tea manufacturing in Sri Lanka, setting a new benchmark for the sector.
Commenting on the achievement, company representatives stated that the certification reflects a long-term vision of balancing premium Ceylon tea production with responsible environmental practices.
“This recognition underscores our commitment to minimizing environmental impact while maintaining the highest standards of quality and operational excellence,” they noted. Industry analysts point out that sustainability certifications are becoming increasingly important in strengthening Sri Lanka’s competitiveness in global tea markets, particularly in environmentally conscious regions such as Europe and North America.
The recognition is expected to enhance RTS Holdings’ international standing while contributing to the country’s broader sustainability goals.
