Ranithma Sanuda and Thisath reach pre quarter final stage at Badminton World Junior

Sri Lankan Women’s Singles shuttler Ranithma Liyanage and Men’s Doubles pair Sanuda Ariyasinghe and Thisath Rupathunga advanced to the pre-quarter-final stage following their wins yesterday at the Yonex Sunrise BWF World Junior Badminton Championship 2025, which is currently underway at the National Centre of Excellence in Amingaon, Guwahati in India.

Ranithma will face India’s Rakshitha Sree Santosh in the Women’s Singles pre-quarter-final after she outsmarted Ler Qi Eng of Malaysia in straight sets in a Round of 32 clash yesterday.


The fourth seed in Women’s Singles, eased past the Malaysian to reach next round with scores of 15/9 and 15/12 in a battle that lasted slightly over 30
minuts.

Facing her first opponent of the seven-day world event, Ranithma spent 28 minutes to thrash Yau Sum Ip of Hong Kong in straight sets in the Round of 64 as the Sri Lankan gathered momentum to move forward as one of the favourites to reach the final. She beat Ip by 15/6 and 15/10 after receiving a bye in the Round of 128.

Meanwhile Sanuda and Thisath will face Alexius Subagio and Aquino Tangka of Indonesia in the Men’s Doubles pre-quarter-finals today, after defeated Matic Cerar and Nikita Peshekhonov of Slovenia in straight sets.


The Sri Lankan pair eased past the Slovenians by 15/12 and 15/7 in the Round of 32 in under 15 minutes, after spending just 20 minutes to dismantle Poland’s Pawel
Kiszczyk and Damian Perkowski by 16/14 and 15/12 in the Round of 64.

Sri Lankan Women’s Double pair Sandathi Hewagallage and Pawani Illeperuma crashed out from the Round of 32 after losing their game against Malaysia’s Nicole Chau and Xin Ying Teh by 15/2 and 15/7, bringing an end to their so-far successful run.


In the Round of 64 they overcame Slovakia’s Ella
Eliaskova aand Charlotta Halova by 2-1 after an epic battle where the scores read as 17/15, 12/15 and 15/8 in favour of the Sri Lankans.


Sri Lankan Men’s Doubles pair
Thejana Herath and Mihila Jayaweera crashed out from the Round of 128 against China's Zhen Wei and Lang Feng, who won the battle by 15/5 and 15/7.
