The Group’s innovative Value-Added Product, TOKYO SUPERBOND Premium Tile Adhesive, received the Sustainable Innovation Award, in recognition of its low carbon footprint and contribution to create healthier living environments, thanks to its low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) content that enhances indoor air quality.
The second award honoured the Tokyo Cement Centre for Technical Excellence in Trincomalee, which received the Sustainable Construction Project Award, recognizing its unique ecofriendly engineering and design features as a Platinum Certified GREEN Building.
These two accolades further affirm Tokyo Cement Group’s deep-rooted and industry-leading commitment to sustainability, deeply ingrained in its corporate DNA and seamlessly embedded into the company’s operations and product strategy.
The 13th World Construction Symposium (WCS) and Sri Lankan Sustainability Awards 2025 was held under the auspices of Hon. Anura Karunathilaka, Minister of Urban Development, Construction and Housing, whilst Prof. Chitra Weddikkara, Prof. Yasangika Sandanayake, Dr. Rohan Karunaratne, Eng. Sagara Gunawardena, Mr. Kalana Alwis, and Eng. Saliya Kaluarachchi were among the distinguished guests.
This year’s event was jointly organized by the Ceylon Institute of Builders (CIOB) in academic partnership with the Building Economics and Management Research Unit and the Department of Building Economics of the University of Moratuwa, and endorsed by the Ministry of Urban Development, Construction and Housing.
The annual awards ceremony encourages environmentally conscious business practices by highlighting remarkable sustainability efforts in the Sri Lankan construction industry.
The Tokyo Cement Centre for Technical Excellence, recipient of the Sustainable Construction Project Award, is the operational and administrative hub of Tokyo Cement’s manufacturing facility in Trincomalee.
It houses the Group’s ISO 17025-accredited R&D and quality assurance laboratories, and the central command center that integrates four fully-automated cement mills and two biomass power plants that sustainably power the entire production process with unmatched efficiency and environmental performance.
The Centre also features a 200-seat, state-of-the-art auditorium for conferences, educational programs, and community outreach, further augmenting its value.
Certified as a Platinum GREEN® Building by the Sri Lanka Green Building Council in 2019, the technical centre incorporates eco-friendly design elements that enhance energy and resource efficiency.
Powered by 75kW of solar energy to reduce grid dependency, the building’s northeast orientation maximizes natural daylight, supported by low-E glass for thermal insulation, LED lighting, and zoned HVAC systems with individual controls to minimize energy use.
Water conservation measures include a wastewater recycling system, a rainwater harvesting facility, and reuse of air-conditioning condensate for irrigation, preserving the building’s greener outlook with minimal environmental impact.
TOKYO SUPERBOND Premium Tile Adhesive that won the Sustainable Innovation Award, is an advanced combination of blended hydraulic cement, graded sand, polymers, and organic additives, engineered to meet Class C2ETS1 under the BS EN 12004 standard.
Its optimized formulation uses less cement while delivering higher performance, significantly reducing its carbon footprint.
This polymer-modified adhesive offers enhanced flexibility and superior bond strength, allowing it to adapt to vast temperature changes in tropical climates, whilst preventing tile cracking or popping, best suited for large-format tile installations.
Formulated with a low VOC content at just 0.36 w/w% (5.2 g/L, tested by ITI), well below the U.S. Green Building Council’s 65 g/L limit for ceramic tile adhesives, makes it a safer, healthier choice for indoor spaces, promoting better indoor air quality and healthier living environments.
As the industry leader, Tokyo Cement Group has made strategic investments to reduce its environmental footprint, integrating innovation, thoughtful design, and a strong commitment to sustainability across its operations and product strategy.
At the helm of these efforts is its highly admired renewable energy generation programme with a total installed capacity of 24MW.
Acknowledging these standard-setting sustainability practices Tokyo Cement Group has been accredited multiple times for making sustainability a key business priority.
Whilst the Group’s promise on sustainability comes to life through a range of far-reaching conservation programmes, Tokyo Cement has earned the reputation as the most trusted supplier of high-quality cement, concrete, and cement-based innovative products in Sri Lanka.
By successfully integrating social welfare and environmental conservation into its mission to enrich the country, its people and the environment, Tokyo Cement Group has reaffirmed its position as the leading partner in Nation-building.
